ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
The Holi festival in Barpeta, locally known as Doul, is more than just a celebration, it’s a cultural identity deeply rooted in tradition. Originating from the days of Srimanta Sankardeva, the festival celebrates love, unity, and spring.
Mathura Das Bura Ata played a key role in popularizing it among the masses. Since then, it has been celebrated with the 'Satriya Parampara' tradition. A special prayer hall dedicated to the festival, housing 'Koila Thakur', was constructed during the time of Mathura Das Burha Ata. The festival’s rituals and performances have been diligently maintained, with local artists contributing to the popularity of Barpeta Holi Geet. The Holi festival at Barpeta Satra in Assam is deeply rooted in cultural heritage. It features traditional art forms like holi geet, Bhaona, Gayan Bayan, Ojapali, and Dhulia nritya. Barpeta Doul Utsav unites people from all backgrounds, fostering community spirit regardless of caste, creed, or religion. It also marks the transition from winter to the lively spring.
