ABOUT THIS PHOTOGRAPH
The Western Yellow Wagtail (Motacilla flava) is a small passerine in the wagtail family. Motachilidae which also includes the pipits and long-claws. I captured this bird by the bank of the Mighty Brahmaputra River in Tezpur.
Family pause at Brahmaputra's end, enchanted by rare wetland birds. Western Yellow Wagtail, a slender 15–16 cm bird with a wagging tail, breeds in temperate Europe and Asia. While resident in milder zones like Western Europe, northern and eastern populations migrate to Africa and South Asia. Breeding males boast olive upperparts and yellow underparts, with diverse head patterns based on subspecies. This insectivorous bird thrives in open water-adjacent areas, often seen in wet meadows, nesting in tussocks and laying 4–8 speckled eggs.
